Public·63 Success Leaders

You May Not Need Another Career Move. You May Need to Stop Carrying the Wrong Things.

High-achieving women are rarely short of capability. What they are often short of is strategic space.

The organisation keeps discovering you can carry more, the rescue, the difficult client, the mentoring, the quiet holding of institutional memory. From the outside it looks like an influence.

From the inside it can become career clutter.

Responsibilities, expectations and behaviours that once proved your value but now occupy the capacity required for the next chapter.

What If Playing Yourself Down Is Actually One Of The Reasons You Became Successful?

There is a contradiction hiding inside the careers of many accomplished women. Some of the behaviours we now describe as “playing small” may once have been precisely the behaviours that allowed them to advance. Keeping your head down, working twice as hard, carefully choosing when to challenge authority and learning how to read a room were not necessarily signs of low confidence. Sometimes they were highly developed strategies for navigating power.

For Black and women of colour, that distinction matters.

Long before terms such as code-switching, emotional labour and stereotype threat entered mainstream leadership conversations, generations of women were teaching their daughters how to survive environments in which intelligence did not necessarily guarantee recognition and visibility did not necessarily guarantee safety. “Don't show off.” “Don't give them ammunition.” “You will have to work twice as hard.”…

When Crisis Tests Leadership:

Inclusion Opportunities for Women In An AI Era.

As artificial intelligence reshapes every sector, from emergency response to corporate decision-making, leaders must evolve how they think about crisis management, reputation and influence. For Black and women of colour, this moment presents both significant challenges and powerful opportunities to lead with impact.

At NBWN, we champion inclusion, progression and representation. In an AI-dominant environment, these values are more critical than ever.

The leaders who inspire the greatest confidence today are not simply those who adopt new technologies quickly. They are those who understand how to balance innovation with cultural intelligence, ethical awareness and human judgement.

Hey there! We know you are juggling so much, constantly striving and innovating.

Sometimes, the conversations around burnout feel... well, a bit off, do not they? It is often framed as a time-management problem, a resilience gap or a personal failure to cope.

But for many of us, particularly Black, Asian and other ethnically diverse leaders, that narrative misses the truth entirely. This is not simply about working 'too hard.' It is about carrying the invisible weight of proving yourself in rooms where you are still questioned, overlooked or expected to outperform just to be considered equal. Our energy is not depleted by capacity, but by the constant, unseen labour of navigating these spaces.

They Call It a “Type.” We Call It a Leadership Style.

Let us consider nine familiar categories often used to describe how people show up at work. Introvert. Extrovert. Optimist. Perfectionist. Useful labels on the surface, tidy enough to feel clear, smart and complete. The kind of framework that gives the impression of understanding people quickly.

But human behaviour, especially in leadership, is rarely that simple because simplicity can be misleading.

What these labels show is that leadership rarely acknowledges behaviour and cannot be judged in a vacuum.

When Did Leadership Become Performance Instead of Responsibility?

There is a moment every leader recognises, even if they do not name it. The room is watching. The decision is yours. The pressure is visible. You speak first. You move fast. You appear decisive. Everyone nods.

Yet weeks later engagement drops, innovation stalls and you sense compliance rather than commitment.

Gallup’s State of the Global Workplace consistently reports that roughly one in five employees are engaged at work. In the United Kingdom, disengagement remains structurally persistent.

McKinsey’s organisational health research confirms that leadership behaviour, not strategy decks, is the strongest predictor of long-term performance and retention. Harvard research on psychological safety shows that teams thrive where leaders create voice before control.

Dealing with Difficult Staff & Conversations

“Success is neither magical nor mysterious. Success is the natural consequence of consistently applying the basic fundamentals.”  Jim Rohn

Every leader encounters pivotal moments when workplace dynamics test their skill. An employee who resists feedback, a meeting repeatedly hijacked by side arguments or a conflict everyone avoids naming.

Research shows these situations are not rare. In fact, a Gallup study found that one in two employees has left a job to escape a manager and Harvard research links poor handling of conflict to up to 30% lower team performance.

Traditional “command-and-control” management, issuing directives, tightening oversight, often makes matters worse by heightening defensiveness and silencing fresh ideas. What proves more effective is a shift toward collective intelligence and invisible leadership.
