The glass of wine at the end of the day can feel like the solution. You have managed the meeting, answered the emails, looked after everybody else, dealt with the hot flushes, forgotten the word you were looking for halfway through a sentence and somehow kept the business, household or team moving. So you pour a drink because it helps you switch off. Or does it?
For some women going through perimenopause and menopause, alcohol may be quietly aggravating several of the symptoms they are drinking to escape. That distinction matters. Alcohol does not cause menopause symptoms, and not every woman will find that drinking makes her symptoms worse. But for some women, alcohol can act as a trigger or amplifier, particularly around hot flushes, disrupted sleep and mood.
