On World Menopause Day 2026, the NBWN Menopause Talk Group is bringing attention to a cost that rarely features in conversations about women's health. Beyond the familiar symptoms, menopause can influence decisions about career progression, working hours, business expansion and retirement. For Black and South Asian women, who may also experience longer-lasting symptoms and delays in receiving appropriate healthcare, the consequences deserve particular attention.

When Everything You’ve Always Managed Suddenly Feels Harder.

Many women spend decades being described as organised, dependable and the person everyone turns to. Then, almost overnight, something changes.

You start forgetting appointments. Concentration becomes harder. You feel mentally exhausted by tasks that once felt effortless. Confidence begins to dip and you wonder whether you are simply doing something wrong.

For some women, these changes are linked to perimenopause. For others, they may uncover a lifelong pattern of ADHD that was never recognised because they became experts at masking their symptoms.

The important thing is this. Brain fog, forgetfulness and overwhelm are not something you should simply dismiss or struggle through alone. Understanding what is happening is the first step towards finding the right support.

SEVEN STEPS TO MENOPAUSE FOR BLACK WOMEN 

1. KNOW YOUR BODY, IT IS NOT "JUST ANXIETY" Brain fog, night sweats, poor concentration, mood changes, these are menopause symptoms, not weakness. Learn the signs early. Your body is speaking. Listen to it before the system silences you.

2. EDUCATE YOURSELF BEFORE CRISIS HITS Don't wait until symptoms are unbearable. Seek out menopause education in your 30s, not your 50s. Knowledge is your first line of defence.

3. WALK INTO THAT APPOINTMENT PREPARED Write your symptoms down. Know your options, including HRT. Go in informed, because too many of us have been sent away with antidepressants we didn't need.

4. REFUSE TO BE DISMISSED If a doctor tells you you're "too young" or "It is probably stress", push back. Ask for a referral. Seek a second opinion. You know your body. Demand to be heard.

When Menopause Is Not Just Hormones:

Menopause is often reduced to a checklist of symptoms or a quiet biological milestone women are expected to manage privately.

What is far less discussed is how profoundly it is a social, workplace and equity issue, one that determines whether women are supported, dismissed or slowly edged out of confidence, care and opportunity.
