The Numbers Do Not Lie
In the UK, a man is diagnosed with prostate cancer every 8 minutes. That is over 68,000 new diagnoses a year and the number of men living with the disease has jumped by 100,000 since 2020, now sitting at around 600,000. Prostate cancer is now the most common cancer diagnosed in the UK, full stop.
Here is the part that should really get your attention. It often has NO symptoms in the early stages. You can feel completely fine and still be carrying it. That is why so many of our brothers only find out once it has already advanced.
Why This Hits Us Harder
We already know Black men face roughly double the lifetime risk of prostate cancer compared to white men and often get diagnosed later, when the disease is more aggressive.
That is not because their bodies are the problem, it is because too many men grew up with an unspoken rule. You do not talk about "that" part of your body.” “You Do not go to the doctor unless something's broke” and admitting you are worried about your health somehow feels like “admitting weakness”.
Let's be real with each other. A blood test does not make you less of a man. Silence killing our fathers, uncles and friends before their time, That is the real threat to our manhood.
Breaking the Cycle, One Conversation at a Time
This is where it starts:
Know your risk. Family history, age 45+ and being a Black man all raise your risk. Know where you stand.
Have the conversation. With your dad. Your brother. Your day-one. The uncle who's never mentioned his health once in your life. Normalise it at the barbershop, the group chat, the dinner table.
Get checked. A simple PSA blood test can start the conversation with your GP. It's quick, it's not embarrassing and it could be the reason you're still here in ten years.
The Good News
Caught early, prostate cancer has some of the best survival rates of any cancer out there, we are talking close to 100% five-year survival for localised disease. This is not a death sentence. It is a wake-up call and it is one we can absolutely answer on your own terms, together, as a brotherhood that looks out for each other.
